Artist Statement

My work uses portraiture and the figure within various contexts to explore a sense of “self” and “home”, and how each subject might know or otherwise discover these. My own journey through life also tends to be documented in my work, especially my lifelong changing attitudes toward nature and society, from early skepticism to later optimism. Each piece intentionally varies from smooth to irregular, orderly to chaotic, to reflect the inner turbulence of knowing and owning one’s “self”. Formerly a painter, now self taught in dyed felted wool, I find the vibrancy and organic textures of this wonderful (and ancient) medium to be especially effective for conveying subtle and complex emotion.
