Abstraction and Figuration in Felted Wool, Oils, & Mixed Media

Elizabeth is currently developing work for her thesis, “Foundations of Forgiveness”, in which she uses portraiture and abstraction to consciously and subconsciously document her changing views on human nature and society, from early skepticism to later optimism.

Artist Biography

Elizabeth Shaw Neviaser was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1965.  A prolific painter in her teenage years, at 17 she was accepted at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts in New York City.  But difficult circumstances at the time required her to go to work immediately out of high school instead.  She spent the next twenty five years building a career, and eventually raising a family, though she continued to develop and evolve her art whenever possible.  At long last, she has returned to art full-time, and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at University of Madison, Wisconsin in the spring of 2020.

Dyed felted wool is now her primary medium.  Though self-taught in this field, she has led a number of workshops on various needle-felting and wet-felting techniques.  Her felted wool works tend to be two dimensional, often presenting a sense of “home”, and what that might mean to different creatures, as well as portraiture. Elizabeth also works with oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, occasionally with cold wax media.  Additional work includes artisan paper-making, and Japanese Shibori dyed textiles.  She is now seeking painting residencies, and plans to involve with international workshops in the world of felt.

Elizabeth is particularly inspired by how directly felted art work can communicate ideas and emotion, and she is grateful to be able to give her full attention back to this endeavor.

Elizabeth currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin.
